The history of oil and gas in Angelina County
The newest chapter in the East Texas story
The standard reference on Angelina County talks about timber, about Lufkin, and about the manufacture of oilfield equipment. It does not talk about producing oil and gas, because until very recently there was not much to say. That changed three years ago.
A timber county
Angelina County was built on pine. Lufkin grew as a sawmill town and became something rarer, a place that manufactured the machinery other people used to drill wells, without having many wells of its own. Lufkin Industries pumping units went all over the world from a county that was not itself an oil county.
The county's historical record on petroleum is thin for the simple reason that the productive rock here is very deep.
Too deep, until it wasn't
The Shelby Trough, the deep southern plunge of the Haynesville, reaches its southern extremity right about here. Wells permitted here run about 16,000 to 17,500 feet, far deeper than the Louisiana core of the play and far beyond anything a mid-century operator could have produced economically.

Adamas Energy has completed six Haynesville wells north and northeast of Huntington, the Antero 1H at 17,059 feet, Antero-Bolivar A 1H at 17,274, Diamer 1H at 17,236, and three wells on the Anky-Aclco Hay units in the 15,400 to 15,800 foot range. In March 2026 the company permitted four more wells on the Utahraptor Gas Unit in the J. H. Finch survey, seven miles north of Huntington.
Aethon Energy completed the Dino Gas Unit 4HB. Natural Energy permitted the Sturgeon 1HB northeast of Lufkin in August 2026, to 17,500 feet.
All of it carries the field name Carthage (Haynesville Shale), an administrative label inherited from a field seventy miles north in Panola County, which tells you how recently anyone thought to draw a separate boundary down here.
