The history of oil and gas in Morris County

A thin record, and horizontals being drilled right now

Morris County is the hardest county in the district to write a history for, because the standard sources barely mention oil at all. What they talk about is iron ore and steel. The interesting thing about this county is not its past, it is what somebody is doing here in 2026.

Iron, not oil

Morris County's industrial history belongs to Lone Star Steel, which built a mill at Daingerfield on East Texas iron ore. Through the middle of the twentieth century that plant was the county's economy. The county histories cover cotton, corn, livestock, timber and steel, and pass over petroleum almost entirely.

We are not going to invent a discovery well for this county. The record does not support one, and a made-up history would be worth less to you than an honest gap.

What is actually underneath

Morris County sits in the Cotton Valley gas trend that runs across the northeastern counties, the same section being worked in Cass, Marion and Camp. It has been drilled without ever producing a field that made the county's name.

The part that matters: 2025 and 2026

Here is why this page exists.

Rose City Resources is drilling horizontal wells in Morris County. The Venetian 1H was permitted in December 2025 and approved in January 2026. The Ballys 1H was permitted in March 2026 and approved in April. The MGM 1H was permitted in April 2026 and approved in May. Barrow-Shaver Resources permitted the White 1 in 2024.

Three horizontal permits in six months, from one operator, in a county with no drilling history worth recording. That is not routine. Horizontal wells are expensive, and nobody drills three of them into a formation they have not re-evaluated.

Rose City is doing the same thing across Cass, Camp and Marion. Someone has taken a fresh look at the Cotton Valley up here.

What to know if you own here

  • If you have been contacted about a lease in the last year, this is why. Leasing activity in a quiet county usually precedes drilling by twelve to twenty-four months.
  • Old leases may not cover a horizontal program. Depth limits, Pugh clauses and pooling language written for vertical wells matter a great deal here.
  • This is early. Three permits is not a play. It is a test, and we will price it as one rather than pretending we know how it turns out.

Verified August 2026.

What we buy in Morris County

Mineral rights, royalty interests, overriding royalty, non-participating royalty, non-operated working interest, and non-producing minerals. There is no size limit in either direction. We buy a single interest in one unit and we buy whole family positions.

If your piece feels too small to bother with, call anyway. Small interests in the same tract usually belong to relatives, and we would rather work with the whole family at once.

How an offer gets made

You call or fill out the form. We pull the county records, the appraisal district roll and the Railroad Commission production history ourselves. Within three business days you get a specific cash number in writing and a plain explanation of how we got there. If we think you should hold, we say that too. We cover title, recording and closing, and you keep every royalty check until the day we close.
